In his first remarks after the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attacks on Israel, President Joe Biden affirmed the United States offered “rock solid and unwavering” support to Israel, “just as we have (done) from the moment the United States became the first nation to recognize Israel, 11 minutes after its founding, 75 years ago.”

In March 2020, the UK government’s chief scientific adviser, Patrick Vallance, presented to the nation a graph showing “the shape of an epidemic”. The red line depicting the number of predicted COVID cases rose to a steep peak before falling again. Vallance explained that delaying and reducing the height of that peak was essential to ease the strain on Britain’s healthcare system. Boris Johnson, then prime minister, put it much more succinctly: “Squash that sombrero.”

Alors que les liens personnels entre les élites politiques françaises et africaines et l’existence de réseaux d’influence officiels et officieux des deux côtés de la Méditerranée ont longtemps été les garants d’une expertise française sur le continent africain, Paris a été surpris par la généralisation de l’hostilité populaire contre sa politique en Afrique, qui s’est notamment manifestée par la rupture des partenariats de sécurité avec trois des cinq pays du G5 Sahel. Force est de constater que les autorités françaises ont été incapables d’anticiper cette évolution tendancielle ainsi que les putschs qui se sont succédé à un rythme accéléré en Afrique francophone depuis 2020.
